How was it in the past?
Over centuries palliasses were used. Straw or also hay was exchanged and the palliasse washed during the year repeatedly. The dormitories were not heated and aired well. The palliasses were taken off by three-part mattresses. These could easily be placed outside, where they were exposed to air and sun. A minimum of hygiene was reached with that.
And today?

The consequences:
